MEET JAKUB

Jakub Mazerant is an Australia-based curator, cultural producer and creative director. For more than two decades, he has worked in the field of art, culture and international collaboration. During this time, he has created exhibitions and cultural initiatives that engage artists, institutions and audiences around the world.
His work combines curatorial development, creative direction and production, with projects often emerging between different disciplines and communities. These include visual arts, illustration, comics, education, artistic collaboration and documentary storytelling.

Jakub is a graduate of the Władysław Strzemiński Academy of Fine Arts in Łódź, where he completed his Master’s degree. His passion for promoting cultural exchange and international relations was sparked in 2000, when he co-organised and participated in the opening of an exhibition of Polish art presented in Montréal, Canada.

In 2003, he founded IllustrateYourself, one of the first online galleries in Poland dedicated to illustration, graphic art and comics. For more than a decade, the platform presented the work of hundreds of international artists.
Soon after establishing the gallery, Jakub launched Illustration Studio, a professional illustration agency working with major publishing houses, advertising agencies and creative organisations in Poland. The agency provided an important opportunity for illustrators to enter the commercial market and build professional visibility.
At the same time, Jakub continued expanding his own artistic work through painting and illustration, as well as co-creating two comic series with writers Dennis Wojda and Przemek Surma.
For many years, he collaborated with the International Festival of Comics and Games in Łódź, participating in the organisation of successive editions, co-creating exhibitions and artistic line-ups, and expanding the festival’s international collaborations. In 2014, he was awarded a commemorative medal for his contribution to the development of Polish comics and the festival.

In 2007, Jakub permanently relocated to Australia, where he established IllustrateYourLife - Studio for Creative Collaboration. The studio became a platform for projects combining curatorial development, production, art and international cooperation.
One of the main directions of his work has been building relationships between Australian artists and creative communities around the world.

His work in Australia has included collaborations with cultural and educational institutions, including the Consulate General of the Republic of Poland in Sydney, where he organised art workshops for the local community. Additionally, he curated and organised Illustrated Sydney, an international exhibition bringing together artists from around the world to explore the city through its architecture, culture, history, art and urban legends. The first edition was created in cooperation with THINK Education, Billy Blue College of Design and the Consulate General of the Republic of Poland. Another project, Coloured Cities - Kolorowe Miasta, brought together illustrations by 14 artists from six countries in a bilingual publication exploring the places that have influenced their creative lives.

In 2018, he created ACE! Australian Comics Exhibition - the first international exhibition series promoting contemporary Australian comics overseas. The project was presented in Poland, Germany, Thailand and China, in collaboration with cultural institutions and Australian diplomatic missions. To date, ACE! has featured the work of 50 Australian artists, combining exhibitions with public events, artist meetings, discussions, masterclasses and workshops.
Another major project is PIECES - an international artistic experiment based on the principle of co-authorship. The project involved 249 artists from 39 countries. PIECES received two Guinness World Records and was presented in exhibitions and at cultural events in Europe and Australia. Its educational programme, PIECES Live, included collaborative comics workshops for the Powerhouse Museum in Sydney, engaging almost 1,000 Australian school students.
In 2019, Jakub curated the Comic Con-versation Festival in Sydney, and the following year he created an international online programme for the Cyber Edition of the International Festival of Comics and Games in Poland, connecting Australian and Polish creators.
In 2023, Jakub was invited as a speaker to the City Ideas: World Conference on Cultural Cities by the World Cities Culture Forum in Chengdu, China.

Jakub Mazerant’s practice encompasses concept development, artist selection, partnership building, exhibition and project production, creative direction, and the evolution of international cultural projects.

He is currently expanding this direction further through Illustrated City - an original documentary series dedicated to artists and cities around the world. Since 2023, Illustrated City has visited Australia, New Caledonia, South Korea, Japan, Vietnam, Thailand, Singapore, China, Switzerland, Sweden and Poland.

Today, Jakub’s work focuses on creating projects that connect people through art, culture and visual storytelling - from individual events and exhibitions to international initiatives developed in collaboration with artists, institutions and organisations.
He is always on the lookout for new and exciting collaborative opportunities. If you believe you have one up your sleeve,
